After talking to a bunch of captains and friends, it seems that the local fishing is just not what it usually is this time of year. I am far from the best blackfisherman, but I have only managed 5 keeper fish in 4 trips. That was 2 strike outs where I had a few shorts but no keepers, and then 3 keepers on 1 trip and 2 on another. It seems that the fishing on both the North and South Shores of Long Island and off of Jersey just never materialized, even before the superstorm.
I have heard of some really good tog trips from Orient, Montauk, and up North, but it seems that something is wrong locally and I don't think its lack of fish. Every trip I have been on showed life on the pieces we were fishing and the boats were all on good bottom, the bite just never turned on.
I have had a few conversations about water clarity, water temperatures, baits, etc. I have seen that everybody has a different theory and they all go back to the same issue, the fish just haven't turned on.
Thoughts, opinions?
