So, looks like i will have the honor of posting the first charter boat report on Eastcoastfishing .
Made a trip yesterday with my friend Capt.Mike Bady of the charter boat Captain's Table in Greenport for some summer cod fishing. I do love winter fishing, but there's nothing like codfishing in shorts and flip flops! Also on board were my three friends Capt.James of the Osprey in Pt Jeff, and Rob Togilator and Billy/Reelcranky.
The plan was to hit Coxes ledge, which has had some pretty good codfishing the last few weeks ( as it usually does this time of year),but based on some intel, Capt.Mike decided to first check an area a few miles short of Coxes. Good idea! Although earlier in the trip, because of a decent breeze and the new moon we had to use upwards of 20oz to properly hold bottom, almost immediately we were into fish. Three of us tried jigging at first, but probably due to the fast drift it wasn't as productive as bait, so once everyone was using bait, it was pretty much steady fishing the whole day. Some shorts here and there, but most were decent fish, including a few 10lbs or so. Nicer size fish than the average size we've been getting in winter, anyway! One of the nicest things about yesterday was the total, 100% absence of doggies. Not a one was caught! That is probably one reason why we had the fishing we had, I have made trips to the same general area this time of year in the past and it was all but unfishable due to the thick schools of those pests.
With 30 or so nice keepers in the box, we decided to call it a day and headed home on a flat ocean. It wa sreally just a great day all around, terrific company, good weather, and nice fishing for one of my favorite species, and we weren't shivering while catching them! Hope to get another trip in while the gettin is good!
